Asphalt rubber is a large market for ground tires in the United States, using an estimated 9 million tires each year. The use of asphalt rubber as an extremely durable road pavement began in the 1960s. Since then, interest has continued, primarily because of asphalt rubber’s ability to reduce cracking and rutting, maintenance costs, traffic noise, the amount of aggregate required, hydroplaning, and overall costs.
